The economy of the two villages nearest to Portasol, Portalón and Matapalo, is mainly agricultural and fishing, with growing interest in tourist activities.
Neighboring Portasol, rice fields can be found and large land areas are dedicated to grow teak and melina wood, two types of fast growing trees. Another important agricultural activity of the area is the seedling production for the African palm which provides the raw material for vegetable oil. The manufacture and process of the oil is also found in the area.
Several small villages are dedicated to fishing. The product is consumed locally and also exported.
